Your Health Interest: Stress Relief

“Stress” means many things. Typically, we think of stress as being the kind of mental or emotional stress that comes from tough days at the office, disagreements with loved ones, or having too many things to do and not enough resources to accomplish them. Many Americans suffer from prolonged stress in their personal and professional lives that can create feelings of anxiety, worry, and dissatisfaction. Stress can also lead to depression, insomnia, weight gain and other serious health issues. Many things in our daily lives cause stress, from long commutes in traffic to hours spent on hold with customer service. But stress can also be environmental and physical. Pollution, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise are forms of stress. Carcinogens, free radicals, and certain types of sugars and fats are stressful for the body.

In a sense, every significant lifestyle issue and health problem we face is due to some type of stress. That’s why mitigating stress – through diet, exercise, emotional and spiritual balance, and supplementation – is so critical.

Did You Know?

Stress from relationships and work can be managed with things like meditation, prayer, exercise, “me time” and supportive social groups. But this type of stress can also be addressed with certain proven supplements. There are nutrients that can specifically ease issues like anxiety, nervousness and insomnia.

The Science Says:

There’s far more to stress than many of us realize. Stress is not only emotional or external – stress also occurs within every cell of the body. This process is called oxidation, and it occurs when we subject our body to “free radicals”. These free radicals are related to everything from inflammation to tumor cell replication. Oxidation is the most destructive response within the body. It is responsible for most diseases, for suppressed immunity, and even aging. That’s why the study of antioxidants has become so popular in the scientific community. To the extent that you can limit oxidation in your body, you can prevent or even reverse many health and lifestyle issues.

What You Can Do:

Preventing external and internal stress is an essential part of maintaining excellent health. You can visit our helpful links below to learn specific ways to address every type of stress.

Recommended Supplement:

We recommend Proloftin and the Damage Control Master Formula.

Your Health Interest: Weight Loss

"Who hasn’t wanted to lose weight at some point? “Lose weight” tops most people’s New Year’s Resolutions. Losing weight helps us feel sexier, more confident and healthier. Losing weight can even help to prevent many diseases, boost energy, and improve mood. The weight-loss industry is one of the most profitable industries in the country, yet over two-thirds of Americans are overweight. Our lifestyles don’t help: many spend countless hours sitting in traffic or slouched in front of a computer. A stressful, hurried way of life coupled with a highly-processed food supply rich in sugar, fat and high in calories has created a national obesity epidemic.
There is always a new fad diet – Atkins, Sonoma, and South Beach, to name just a few – but serious weight problems persist and preventable conditions like diabetes and heart disease result, killing millions needlessly every year. Even children are now overweight in record numbers and face serious health problems children never used to suffer from.

Did You Know?

The average American has access to 3,900 calories daily of empty, cheap, quickly produced food. That’s a full three times what many people need to consume, and about 600 calories more per day than was available just two decades ago. And most restaurant portion sizes are actually for two to four people! The ease of “eating on the go” with fast food restaurants, delivery services, snack machines and office a la cartes has made constant, excessive eating seem like the norm. Many people eat too much without even realizing they’re doing so.

The Science Says:

Wondering if Atkins really works? If the South Beach Diet is healthy for you? If the BMI is an accurate predictor of a healthy weight? And what on earth is the glycemic index?
The truth is, certain diets can be more effective – particularly in the short term – than others. Diets like Atkins and South Beach work because carbohydrates are severely limited. This creates a process called “ketosis” which forces the body to burn fat stores for energy. Whether or not this is healthy has been a subject of controversy. For example, Atkins is thought to increase cholesterol, but there is significant evidence to suggest that controlling cholesterol itself may not be as important as reducing inflammation in the body (which, incidentally, is caused by processed foods high in sugar and carbohydrates). In general, however, the overwhelming body of science finds that the healthiest diets – the world over – contain copious amounts of vegetables, especially greens. Good fats from fish, olive oil, and nuts is also an important component of a healthy diet. Finally, consuming plenty of lean protein and limiting the amounts of processed grains and sugars in the diet is important. Unfortunately, the American diet is very high in bad fats (typically from refined corn and soybean oils and fatty meats), sugars (from carbs, soda and other junk foods), and poor-quality protein (from factory-produced dairy and meats).

What You Can Do:

The most important factor in losing weight is simply consuming fewer calories than are burned. While certain diets have an advantage over other diets for their health benefits, weight can be lost on just about any eating regimen if calories are reduced. Consuming slightly more fat and protein will speed weight loss, but at the end of the day, a calorie is still a calorie. That’s why effective weight loss requires exercise, too. By burning more calories than you consume, you will lose weight.
Whatever your activity level, you will have to increase it in order to lose weight, and you will have to do so consistently, for at least several weeks before you will begin to see major change. Be mindful of calories and try to choose foods that are quality – that is, foods that are nutrient-dense and satisfying, such as vegetables, good fats, and lean protein.

Recommended Supplement:

Responsibly Slim – the only weight-loss shake that contains a high level of fiber in addition to valuable protein and fat.

Why:

Your weight-loss plan should provide high levels of both protein and fiber to help your body optimize calories and burn them more efficiently. Responsibly Slim is a great way to lose weight even if you are always on the go. No fillers or chemical additives – just quality ingredients to help you lose pounds safely and permanently.

Your Health Interest: Immune Support

Strengthening the immune system is an important part of increasing quality of life and personal productivity. When the immune system is weak or suppressed, we not only are more susceptible to colds and infections. We are also less energetic, do not feel refreshed upon waking, experience mood swings and irritability, and are even prone to weight gain!
Reduced immunity means we can’t cope with stress as effectively – both external stress (such as environmental pollution and emotional concerns) and internal stress from inflammation, free radicals and stress hormones like cortisol.

Did You Know?

The three major immunity inhibitors are sugar, stress and sloth: the three S’s. Sugar is one of the most powerful immune suppressors known to humans – that’s why a diet high in refined corn oil, corn syrup, and other sweeteners is so dangerous. Americans face out-of-control emotions, weight gain, chronic pain, and susceptibility to infections, cold and flu – all because of the high amount of sugar in our diet. Things like white bread, soda and French fries are consumed by most of us every single day; it’s no wonder Americans call in sick so often!

Stress – again, both external and internal – is also a powerful immune suppressor (harming the very system that exists to help us fight stress!).

And lack of exercise – sloth – deprives our body of vital hormones and enzymes needed to cope with germs, free radicals and other stressors.

The Science Says:

To boost your immune system, scientific research has revealed plenty of vital nutrients and antioxidants that can help. Exercise is also a critical part of boosting the immune system, along with stress management and adequate sleep.

What You Can Do:

To improve your resistance to infections and boost your energy and mood, make sure to do the following:

  • Exercise at least three times a week for at least 30 minutes

  • Get at least 7 quality hours of sleep each night (7 good hours is better than 9 bad)

  • Consume foods that are natural immunity-boosters, such as vegetables and good fats from fish, nuts and olive oil

  • Reduce intake of sodas, sweets, processed “white” grains, and pre-made meals as much as possible

  • Take a supplement with specific immune-boosting nutrients and a complete antioxidant profile

Recommended Supplement:

The Damage Control Master Formula

Why:

The Damage Control Master Formula contains a scientifically engineered, powerful blend of synergistic vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, plant extracts and nutrients carefully designed to support the immune system. Your Health Interest: Blood Sugar

With one-third of American children predicted to develop type 2 diabetes in the coming years, and over 40 million Americans in a “pre-diabetic” state, blood sugar has become a national health issue.
High blood sugar levels over a prolonged period of time cause myriad health problems and lead to diabetes. In addition to the threat of serious disease, even moderately elevated blood sugar levels can cause terrible health problems that grow cumulatively worse. It is essential to keep blood sugar levels healthy – and this means more than simply keeping them from getting too high or too low. Healthy blood sugar also means your body is consistent in how it regulates sugar. The “spikes” in blood sugar are the real danger, because they subject the major organs of the body (especially the heart, pancreas, thyroid, and adrenal glands) to major stress.

Did You Know?

The American diet is replete with sugar and refined carbohydrates that quickly convert to sugar in the bloodstream. People did not eat sugar in significant amounts until the 1800s. People didn’t eat sugar at all until the Middle Ages! Our bodies were simply not designed to utilize sugar. Metabolizing sugar creates a pro-inflammatory state in the body and has many side effects. Excess sugar in the diet causes mood swings, anxiety and panic attacks, diabetes, inflammation, obesity, heart disease, nervousness, fungal infections, skin blemishes, and headaches.

The Science Says:

Prolonged raised blood sugar levels causes reduced immunity, inflammation leading to many diseases, diabetes, mood disorders and storage of fat. High blood sugar is also incredibly stressful to the liver and creates a “pro-oxidant” state in the body.

What You Can Do:

The three critical factors for reducing blood sugar immediately and permanently are:

  • Frequent exercise. This strengthens the various tissues and systems of the body so that you can burn calories more efficiently, flush toxins and free radicals, and improve overall health. Exercise will also help in weight loss, which is often linked to blood sugar issues.

  • Reduce or eliminate all sugars in the diet. Sugar is not just in candy and soda. Sugar is in juice, pastries, most processed foods, sauces, dips and dressings. Sugar is also the major ingredient in popular foods like burgers, pizza, nachos, pasta, burritos, breakfast cereal, fruit-flavored yogurts, juices and energy bars. Any refined grain or processed starch is something you should avoid. Instead, make your meals consist of vegetables, lean protein, and some beneficial fat. Examples include salads, stir fries, grilled fish or chicken, steamed vegetables, and eggs.

  • Supplement appropriately. Support healthy functions in the body with antioxidants and nutrients that have been scientifically shown to help regulate blood sugar.

Recommended Supplement:

The Damage Control Master Formula

Why:

High blood sugar is a twin-blade: you must reduce your blood sugar level and also support the health of the other organs and systems of the body that are harmed by high blood sugar. The Damage Control Master Formula contains the most potent, synergistic blend of nutrients that address such issues as immunity, mood and cognition, cardiovascular health, cell and tissue repair, and antioxidants. This formula also contains specific nutrients proven by science to assist in your blood sugar goals: to name just a few, zinc, manganese, chromium, and vanadium.

Your Health Interest: Anti-Aging & Disease Prevention

Though we cannot prevent the aging process, there are ways of reducing the effects of aging so that we can experience improved quality of life even as we age. Both physical appearance and overall health concerns can be addressed through prudent lifestyle choices.

Did You Know?

Aging and disease share a common component: tissue wasting. Consider the biological characterization: as we age, cells take longer to repair, skin and hair tissues lose resilience, vision and other senses weaken, and the tissues of our organs, bones and muscles begin to waste away. Disease operates in much the same mechanism. Cells are attacked from within (as a natural part of aging) or damaged from external sources (such as smoking, obesity or other poor lifestyle choices). This is precisely why we are more susceptible to diseases as we age: the cumulative effects of decades of poor lifestyle choices meet the weakened body, and disease results.

The Science Says:

A combination of exposure to oxidative damage from free radicals and lifestyle choices is the most important factor in how you age. Science has proven that limiting free radical exposure and addressing aging through healthy lifestyle choices is the best way to ensure not only longevity, but quality of life as we age. Longevity is arguably meaningless if you are suffering and unhealthy, fighting numerous conditions and diseases and taking various drugs. But true quality of life, full of vitality, energy and good health, is possible if appropriate measures are taken. Ask yourself: do you want to live longer…or better?

What You Can Do:

There are many important steps to take in order to thwart both the negative effects of aging and the possibility of disease. Though no lifestyle or supplement can necessarily cure disease or reverse serious effects of aging, much can be done to limit and even prevent damage to your appearance and your health. Here are a few of the key steps to implement in your life:

  • Exercise – but not too much! Regular, varied exercise (both resistance/weight training and aerobic activity) is crucial to sustaining bone and muscle tissue throughout your life. Studies show that exercise is perhaps the best way to avoid most diseases associated with aging. Exercise also reduces stress, a major factor in aging. Excessive or intense exercise isn’t necessary and may actually do more harm than good – just make your activity level regular, enjoyable, and challenging.

  • Diet – a diet based on organic, fresh, unprocessed foods is best. Stick to produce, lean protein, and vital fats (such as those found in fish, nuts and olive oil). Eat vegetables with reckless abandon. Avoid sugar, stimulants, and processed foods at all costs. When you do eat grains, make sure they are whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat, or legumes.

  • Stress management – Limit physical, emotional and environmental stress. This is perhaps the most important “umbrella” behavior to be mindful of. Stress is anything that harms our bodies – smoking, drinking excessive alcohol, unhealthy relationships, unfulfilling or stressful work, negative behaviors, unhealthy junk foods, and so on. The more you can do to eliminate stressful behaviors in your life and stressful factors in your physical environment, the healthier you will be.

  • Supplementation - Also consider controlling internal stress to cells, the building blocks of the body. Fight the aging and disease-ravaging effects of oxidative stress to cells with antioxidants. As we age, we also lose the ability to effectively absorb nutrients at the optimal levels of a youthful body, so it’s all the more important to supplement our diets with a powerful, comprehensive, full-spectrum multivitamin.

Your Health Interest: Antioxidants

Almost every theory of aging and disease suggests that free-radical damage is the major cause of our getting sick and/or old prematurely. DNA can become damaged, and cell membranes and important proteins can be destroyed by renegade free radicals that form in the body due to our hectic lifestyles and unhealthy diet. This, in turn, can lead to early cell death and premature aging. Our bodies do have resident internal antioxidant systems that can control some of the damage, but recent studies suggest that the amount of stress and oxidative damage we incur living in our present environment simply overwhelms those systems, forcing us to look elsewhere for antioxidant assistance. That's the reason why antioxidants first started appearing in health food stores 20 years ago. Now, it appears from the research that we not only need a high level of ORAC potency, but also a wide variety of these antioxidant nutrients, because different antioxidants exert their benefits in different parts of the cell.

Did You Know?

ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is a measure of the antioxidant activity of a food or supplement as determined through a very specific laboratory test. The ORAC value of a food or supplement is the accepted industry standard for measuring antioxidant activity and can be used to accurately and fairly compare the antioxidant “power” of one food or supplement to another. When blueberries were recently named a “superfood” and the top food choice among nutritionists, it was based almost entirely on blueberry’s ORAC score (which, by the way, was 2,500 ORAC per cup).

The Science Says:

The Damage Control Master Formula, recognized for nine years as one of the most comprehensive high-potency multivitamin antioxidant formulas ever developed, has now scored among the highest per-capsule ORAC value of any multi-vitamin supplement on the market. Brunswick Labs, an independent third party testing agency that performs ORAC testing for the USDA and the supplement industry, tested the Master Formula at over 20,000 ORAC units per serving! That is the equivalent antioxidant power of eating 40 servings of fruits and vegetables each day, without any fat, carbohydrates or calories. The results even astounded people affiliated with the lab, who were used to seeing most so-called “high-potency” formulas test somewhere between 2,000-6,000 ORAC units per serving.

  • Exercise – but not too much! Regular, varied exercise (both resistance/weight training and aerobic activity) is crucial to sustaining bone and muscle tissue throughout your life. Your Health Interest: All-in-One Nutrition

The primary thing that makes Primal Nutrition’s multivitamin supplement line, Damage Control, different is that we don’t make “commodity” products – because good health and nutritional support isn’t about a trend. Our signature product, the Damage Control Master Formula, was created with the idea that one supplement should address all your health and aging concerns with the absolute best, most proven, most potent nutrients available, no expense spared. There are many supplements you can buy at your health food store or Costco that are indistinguishable from some that you see in these pages at three times the price. Basic vitamins are fine for some, but at Primal, we stand behind the name “Damage Control” with pride. We don’t want to have to compete on price for a low-end product. Instead, we specialize in using very specific micronutrients to assist in cell repair and to enhance every important aspect of health. We do that by creating formulas containing not one or two, but many different research-proven nutrients to attack the problem. In fact, the Master Formula has 51 of these different nutrients, each in amounts you might otherwise have to purchase as separate bottles in a health food store.
We choose exceptional nutrients based on research and proven performance rather than on price. The result is a unique formula you just can’t find anywhere else except directly from us. Many folks – even supported health experts – know very little about nutrition science in general and the science of micronutrition (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients) in particular - especially doctors. As a result, many supplement companies base their products on one or two fad or “headline” ingredients and hope that those will be enough to convince an unsuspecting athlete that this is all s/he needs. However, optimal health is a complex issue that can’t be addressed by one or two nutrients.
Our products have been successful because people get results. You will feel the difference.

Did You Know?

Primal Nutrition’s premium products are designed and created according to the belief that an ideal nutritional supplement is one that perfectly suits the individual’s needs, not a company’s. We deliver premium products because that’s what you deserve to experience.
Premium products mean:

  • No faddish or trendy ingredients.

  • No hype. Only science. Each ingredient is backed by rigorous studies.

  • No ingredient redundancy – for optimum effectiveness and safety.

  • No inactive, inferior, synthetic or incomplete nutrient profiles.

  • No stomach discomfort – our proprietary blend ensures that.

  • No recycling. Did you know many supplement companies recycle years-old nutrients into their supplements? Our products are manufactured fresh every month by a stringent independent lab.

  • No need for another supplement – ever. Our products have been meticulously engineered, researched and tested to deliver industry-shattering effectiveness in an unbeatable comprehensive formula. No more supplementing your supplements. No more cabinets overflowing with dozens of different pills and capsules or the worry of unsafe nutrient combinations or dosages. And all for an incredible value.

The Science Says:

Primal Nutrition founder Mark Sisson:

“The sports nutrition market is certainly a crowded one, with hundreds of companies fighting for many slices of a fairly small pie. My biggest concern has always been the outrageous claims made by unscrupulous companies - particularly in the bodybuilding market. The FDA doesn’t really have the resources to police the supplement industry the way they should. It makes it difficult for the rest of us to comply with the law and still be able to claim in our ads that we have great, effective products. I try to focus on educating my customers on what to look for and what to avoid as well as how to train properly. I believe my unique background as an athlete, coach, author and scientist gives me more credibility than the typical businessperson in the sports supplement industry.”

Primal Nutrition’s products deliver the ultimate in scientifically proven synergy for an effective, powerful, comprehensive system that addresses all your health concerns: aging, oxidation, cognition, energy, pain, performance, stress, mood, weight control, blood sugar, prevention, and general health.

Your Health Interest: Omega 3’s

With the introduction of diets like the Prudent Diet to the blockbuster Pritikin Diet and Susan Powter’s crusade against fat, the 1960s through the 1990s waged an all-out war on fat in the diet. Of course, there were questions:

  • Why did Mediterranean peoples look so much slimmer and have much lower rates of heart disease and cancer, despite high amounts of fat from fish and olive oil in their diets?

  • If fat was bad, why had humans relied on fat from nuts, meat, dairy and fish for millennia?

  • How about that “French paradox”?

The U.S. government was quick to support corn and grain producers and recommend a low-fat diet high in cereals, pasta and bread. During the 80s and 90s, “light” varieties of just about every previously fattening food became available. Fat was derided and to be avoided at all costs. Many folks still avoid fat scrupulously. We’ve been told all fat is bad – but is that true?

Did You Know?

Not only is fat not bad for you (it is glucose – sugar – not fat that stores as excess fat cells), it is necessary to good health. Without fat, our bodies cannot regulate hormones effectively. Without fat, our bodies cannot absorb many vitamins and nutrients. Without fat, our bodies develop infections, poor skin and hair, and our vision suffers. We need fat. Fat is actually a wonderful, dense source of nutrition. The key is to consume “good” fats.

The Science Says:

“Good” fats are long-chain fats such as Omega-3 fats. These fats are found in certain foods, such as olive oil (in small amounts), fish, nuts, avocadoes and grass-fed organic meats. You can even purchase eggs that are now DHA-enhanced. There are three types of Omega 3 fat: DHA, or docosahexanoic acid, EPA, or eicosapentanoic acid, and ALA, or alpha linoleic acid.

What You Can Do:

Of course, you should eat foods containing beneficial fats. The best and most efficient fat is DHA, which is found in fish. Unfortunately, with our major fisheries and ocean waters being so heavily contaminated with pollutants like mercury, it’s not safe to consume fish on a daily basis. That’s why supplementing with a highly-filtered, prescription-grade Omega-3 oil is such a convenient and safe way to get your vital fats.

Recommended Supplement:

Vital Omegas

Why:

Omega-3 fats have been scientifically shown to serve tremendous potential benefits to the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and brain. Omega-3 fats help improve sleep, regulate mood and hormones, improve metabolism and organ health, boost immunity, fight stress, protect against oxidation, reduce inflammation, and drastically improve cardiovascular and heart health. Omega-3 fats are crucial to good health and one of the most important nutritional resources you can ever utilize. Your Health Interest: Sleep

Sleep! Many of us do not get enough or suffer from poor quality sleep. According to major government studies and non-profit sleep research organizations, as many as one in three Americans suffers from some sort of sleep issue: from sleep apnea to insomnia to restless leg syndrome to anxious sleep, snoring and trouble falling asleep.

Did You Know?

Everyone dreams, even if they do not remember the dreams.
Despite the drugs available, the easiest, safest and best ways to cure restless leg syndrome and insomnia are usually with daily exercise and avoidance of stimulants like caffeine and alcohol.
There have been documented cases of some people needing only 1 or 2 hours of sleep a night (wouldn’t that be nice!).
Restless leg syndrome and troublesome snoring can both be cleared up by losing as little as 4 pounds.
Sleep is one of the best stress-relievers.
Quality of sleep is more important than quantity of sleep.
The myth that you must sleep in 4-hour increments or risk throwing off your circadian rhythm is just that: a myth.

The Science Says:

Though sleep is still somewhat shrouded in mystery, scientists have learned more. During sleep, the brain alternately roars and shuts down. Cells are repaired, the mind is refreshed, and the muscles are given a chance to relax. But sleep serves additional vital functions: during our resting hours, the body releases and regulates critical hormones. In fact, from the hours of about 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. (it varies slightly from person to person), the all-important anti-aging Human Growth Hormone is released. HGH literally keeps us young. Sleep interferences – from our own health issues to external noises to sleep disorders – can negatively affect our HGH production, literally causing us to age before our time.

What You Can Do:

Here are some great tips for effective, restful sleep:

  • Take a warm bath

  • Get a neck massage – or, better yet, a hamstring massage. Much of our stress is stored in the hamstrings and knees.

  • Listen to soothing music

  • Drink warm milk

  • Drink herbal tea

  • Eat a bedtime snack containing a little calcium, like organic cheese

  • Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol and Tobacco

  • Sleep in a room that has plenty of fresh air

  • Sleep on a comfortable bed (it’s worth the cost!)

  • Sleep on your back (sleeping on your side can cause muscle and joint discomfort)

  • Exercise daily

  • Be consistent about when you go to bed

  • If you don’t fall asleep after 30 minutes, get up & do something relaxing to bring on sleep

  • Here’s an easy one: get up earlier – you’ll crash that night!

  • Avoid frequent naps

  • Avoid bright bedroom clocks and don’t keep the television on at night

Recommended Supplement:

Proloftin, Vital Omegas

Why:

Proloftin is the world’s most gentle, effective relaxant and stress reliever. Taken before bedtime, you’ll notice improved sleep and a general feeling of calm during your waking hours. We also recommend an Omega-3 fish oil supplement because studies show getting these vital fats improves mood, stress control, and sleep. In some studies, insomnia has cleared up completely when participants supplements with Omega-3 fats. Many mood and sleep issues clear up entirely when you choose to get good fats in your diet and supplement regimen.

Your Health Interest: Memory & Brain Support

Our minds are our most precious assets, so we should do everything possible to ensure our brains are strong for years to come. Unfortunately, as we age we are faced with a decline in mental acuity and sharpness. But new research suggests there are numerous ways to delay the inevitable. Certain lifestyle choices can help improve our memory and cognition, and support brain function.

Did You Know?

Regular, short mental exercises can bolster reaction time, memory, and critical thinking skills in middle-aged and elderly people.
Physical exercise can be as good for your mind as it is for your body.
Certain natural vitamins and minerals can actually improve your ability to focus and concentrate and support your brain’s many functions.

Here are just a few of the key brain-supporting nutrients:

  • Vitamin E may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease

  • Evidence suggests that PS (Phosphatidyl Serine) helps support memory and enhances cognition - brain functions that typically decline with age

  • DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) helps increase attention span and alleviate symptoms associated with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder)

  • Choline, a precursor to acetylcholine, is essential for brain function and can help protect against dementia

  • Evidence suggests Ginkgo Biloba enhances memory

  • Vinpocetine helps to increase mental clarity and concentration

  • TMG (Trimethylglycine) can help to improve mood and alertness

  • Clinical trials suggest that CoQ10 (Co-enzyme Q10) improves cognitive function

  • Supplementing your diet with folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 may significantly improve processing speed, memory and verbal skills

  • Omega 3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function and development

The Science Says:

Science supports the popular wisdom that an active mind is a healthy mind. Research shows that people who regularly partake in mentally stimulating activities are more likely to remain sharp into old age. The old adage ‘use it or lose’ applies perfectly in this case. Daily mental calisthenics targeting specific cerebral capacities may be able to help improve memory, reaction time, critical thinking skills, and visual and spatial perception.

Mental exercise isn’t the only type of exercise that may strengthen your brain. Mounting evidence suggests that regular physical exercise may play a large role in maintaining a healthy mind. The theory is that regular exercise helps the body deliver blood and oxygen to your brain more efficiently. This in turn helps to create, protect, and strengthen neural pathways and connections. It turns out that hitting the gym is good for your body and your mind.

What you put in your body is just as important as what you do with it. It is clear that certain vitamins and minerals, like those listed above, can facilitate the delivery of blood and oxygen to the brain, improve mitochondrial function, provide neuronal cells with oxidative damage protection, and many other mechanisms that result in a fit brain. Omega-3 fats have a number of brain-supporting attributes including promoting neuronal growth and facilitating communication between brain cells. A deficiency in Omega-3 fats has been linked to depression, autism, schizophrenia and other mental disorders. Omega-3 fatty acids are so vital to brain health that they have been called ‘brain food’ by doctors.

What You Can Do:

Stay active, both mentally and physically. Engage your mind in puzzles and mind-engaging activities. Be inquisitive and try to learn something new every day. Maintain a regular exercise regimen involving a cardiovascular workout and weight-lifting. Get outside and move. Start slowly by walking and build up to more intense activity.
Make the important lifestyle choice of supplementing your diet with important brain-supportive vitamins and nutrients. Incorporate taking vitamins on a regular basis into your daily schedule.
